The Green Initiative produces a Greenhouses gases emission inventory using a methodology developed by the World Resources Institute (WRI), based on information such as electricity and fossil fuel consumption, transportation and so on. The calculation are done using emissions factors approved by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC). Based on the inventory results the greater emissions sources within the project activity are identified to promote an emission reduction process bond to reducing, recycling and reutilization (3R). The number of trees needed to compensate the emissions that could not be reduced are also defined by the greenhouse gases inventory results. The reforestation areas are identified by the São Paulo’s State Environment Secretariat, permanent protection areas (APP’s) since they are degraded riparian areas.
In enterprises, products or services communication that have had its greenhouses gases emissions compensated. A Carbon Free certificate is granted containing the number of trees planted to offset the total greenhouse gases emitted by the activity, as well the recovered area’s geographical coordinates.
The Green Calculator is available on our web site, as well a list of Brazilian Atlantic Coastal forest native species with instruction to plant them. Any one can calculate their day-to-day emissions and plant their own trees to offset it. Therefore to those who wish to compensate their emissions through The Green Initiative the additional benefits are:
Since the reforestation occurs on a Permanent Protection ares that are currently degraded, more than compensate emissions, the area’s restoration contributes to recover the river’s riparian area, that means - vegetation along the rivers margins, offering a package or environmental services, as combat to the desertification process and conservation of the biological diversity.
We plant only the ecosystem’s native species, since the seedlings adaptation chances are greater, guaranteeing the regional biological diversity.
After the project implementation, an intensive maintenance is conduced by The Green Initiative in partnership with local stakeholders. Guaranteeing that the seedlings will grow strong and become a new forest. After the two first years the areas are monitored through satellite imagery.
Since the reforested areas are denominated as Permanent Protected under the Brazilian law, it is a crime to log or destroy the forest.
The Green Initiative stimulates the local economy absorbing the recovering area’s workforce.
